The Role of Changing Techonology in the Film Industry

I opted to write my next blog entry for Forward Movement on this issue. It spurned a lot of discussion in our post describing the use of free music albums to generate interest in a product.

As most lawyers don't deal with this issue as much + the field as a whole tends to be slow (even resistant) to change, I wrote this as food for thought:

Duplass Brothers' New Film Named

I like the Duplass Brothers. So do artists, indie filmmakers, and "indiewood" players alike. Their third feature, and they have landed a cast Wes Anderson would be proud of. Now they have their title. Thanks to the Playlist for this wonderful new info on hands down our favorite young, former DIY filmmakers. Find out after the jump:

Do we all remember the upcoming project by mumblecore mavens Mark and Jay Duplass starring Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly, creatively known in the past as, "The Untitled Duplass Brothers Project" (or "Safety Men" as it was originally known as)?

It is said to follow an "obtuse love triangle" between a single mother (Tomei), her son (Hill) and a 40-something guy (Reilly) with a past defined by a failed marriage who begins a relationship with the single mother.

Well it now has a title and that title is "Center of Attention." Test screenings have begun in L.A. Here's the new description:

A divorcee (John C. Reilly) gets a second chance at love when he begins an affair with a free spirited woman (Marisa Tomei) only to realize that her close knit relationship with her son (Jonah Hill) is getting in the way. This is a fresh and unexpected dramedy about the complicated realm of love, relationships and family.

Scene Magazine's Bob Ignizio Reviews Uptown

Bob Ignizio, a freelance writer for Cleveland's 'Scene' Magazine and occasionally other publications, reviewed Uptown. It was roughly 3 weeks ago, but we didnt receive a notice that one was written and therefore found it randomly. Nonetheless, a cool word or two about the film after the jump:

"Ben (Chris Riquinha) and Isabel (Melissa Hampton) are two young New Yorkers out on their first date after having met online via Myspace. The two hit it off over dinner, but afterwards Ben learns that Isabel is married (her profile made no mention of a husband), and Isabel learns Ben is single (he listed himself as married on the site as a joke about how bad he is in relationships). Despite the awkwardness, the two clearly have chemistry and continue to see each other as “just friends”, but can that really work out?

Director Brian Ackley, who co-wrote the movie with his two stars (I’m guessing because they improved enough of their performances to deserve a writing credit) has crafted a believable film about modern relationships. The thing I like most about this film is that it’s no cookie-cutter Hollywood romance. The problems that arise from Ben and Isabel’s relationship aren’t the typical romance film obstacles we’re used to seeing, and although we don’t see much of Isabel’s husband, he isn’t the stereotypical jack-ass “other guy” that makes it easy to root for Ben to steal the girl away.

The film is shot well, and the two lead performances are exceptional. It’s obvious these two actors really knew their characters inside and out, and they play their roles with depth and believability. The biggest problem with the film is in the editing and pacing. Some scenes just go on too long, simply trailing off after they’ve already accomplished what was necessary. So even though Uptown is only 75 minutes, it feels considerably longer. Despite those flaws, I think if you’re in the mood for a realistic film about modern relationships and can get past the slow spots, you’ll probably like Uptown. 2 ½ out of 4."

Spike Lee Goes VOD

IndieWIRE has cool news about Spike Lee joining the VOD game. Here some of it is below:

"Festivals films, including a number of documentaries, have a growing television outlet with the expansion of on demand offerings from the Rainbow’s Sundance Channel and IFC. Spike Lee’s “Passing Strange The Movie” will launch the Sundance Channel’s “Sundance Selects” series, an ongoing video-on-demand program, which kicks off on August 26. The film, which will also have a theatrical release, is based on a the musical develped at the Sundance Theater Lab and Directors Lab that had its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The film tells the semi-autobiographical story of a young black man who leaves behind his middle-class church-centered life upbringing in the 1970s for a trip to Europe in search if his “artistic and personal identity. Cookies & Cream Mentioned in The Examiner

The Examiner has a great article about this year's Idaho International Film Festival and they list Cookies & Cream first on the list of features that are being screened. Here is some of it below after the jump:

Boise Film Festivals 101: Movies scheduled for this year's Idaho International Film Festival
- written by Christine Munson

"It's always exciting to see what movies are going to be screened at a film festival. You make your pics based on trailers and blurbs and hope you can fit all the ones you'd like to see into your busy schedule. This is only if you're not lucky enough to have the money and the time for the full pass. There's always a couple of movies that for some reason or other you won't be able to see. That's what's so cool about social networking sites. If your festival has a page, and in this day and age they should, you can see what the selections are as commitments to the festival are made."

A Tracey Moore Profile

We are incredibly lucky to be working with acting coach, former casting director, writer/director, and producer Tracey Moore.

Tracey arrived in New York City to pursue a directing career, but she was suddenly sidetracked by the many opportunities that she discovered. He first venture was CEO of "The Jokes On You!" Inc., an ensemble of actors who performed practical jokes for hire. Through the success of her company, she developed lasting relationships with various actors who were anxious to be a part of this wacky production.

After five years of performing jokes, a director noticed the bulging files that Tracey had and asked her for a casting favor. "Find a void, fill it," says Moore-Marable and so Tracey Moore Casting was born. Tracey has gone on to cast for feature films such as Just Another Girl on the I.R.T., New Jersey Drive and A Brother's Kiss. As Extras Casting Director, Tracey cast for the popular Fox show New York Undercover. Her commercial credits include; Nike, Sprite, Coca-Cola, New York Times, Miller Lite, Pontiac and Taco Bell to name a few.

In her "spare" time, Tracey enjoys speaking to students at various colleges. She has lectured at Howard University, Long Island University, CW Post, Georgia State University and Loyola Maramount University. She also teaches an audition technique class called The Spirited Actor and she conducts private coaching sessions with musical artists such as Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Eve, Nelly, Chico DeBarge, Renee (Zhane), Faith Evans, Q-Tip, Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish).

Most recently Tracey coached multi-platinum recording artist, Nelly on the featured film Snipes directed by Rich Murray. What does the future hold for Tracey? "I don't know what will come next because I know that life is right now, so I'm going to live in every moment of it!" laughs Moore-Marable.

Here is a great CBS Early Show interview with Tracey:

Here is Tracey's UPN Interview:

Meeting Mr. Smith

Our friend, our collaborator, our producer/casting director and celebrity acting coach Tracey Moore is also heavily involved in an engaging, wonderful new documentary called Meeting Mr. Smith.

Inspired by a television interview, a struggling New York filmmaker embarks on a mission to meet with superstar actor, Will Smith to prove to himself and the world what's possible.

One day, after almost a decade of scraping by as an independent filmmaker, Brian Evans had reached the end of his rope emotionally, spiritually and financially. He turned on the television to see Will Smith discussing, among other things, what it takes to be a success. Will spoke of the power that comes to us if we just DECIDE; just make a definitive choice, and the universe moves out of your way. That interview had a huge impact on Evans. He decided that the best way to test Will’s theory would be to choose a task that seemed impossible and simply DECIDE to achieve it. So, with absolutely no money and no resources except a borrowed camera, and the help of his good friend and production partner Matt Smith, Brian Evans decided to do the impossible – to begin this documentary, and complete the task of Meeting Mr. Smith. Here is the trailer:

Stay tuned as we continue to track this film's progress.

Son of a Seahorse

Our friends Tom and Mary Russell of TurtleNeck Films commented on, and suggested an addition to our earlier post (below) about lesser-known films that feature performances from Joe Swanberg. Their suggestion is actually one of the their films - Son of a Seahorse. Here is their summary of the story, and the DVD itself, now for SALE on Amazon.

"From an audacious opening scene that runs over 22 minutes (before the credits!) to an ending that is as quiet as it is disquieting, SON OF A SEAHORSE is an unusual (and unusually satisfying) comedy from the Russells. It's a very funny film about a very angry man. That conflicted and explosive man is played by David Schonscheck in a star-making performance that is contrasted and complimented by Adrienne Patterson's smart and stylish performance as his no-nonsense, sharp-edged wife.

The film features creature effects by Steampunk Legend Jake Hildebrandt, a supporting performance by filmmaker Joe Swanberg, and awesomeness, as always, by the Russells. It's DIY filmmaking at its boldest, brassiest, and funniest in a disc that's jam-packed with extras."

BONUS FEATURES: Three episodes of the zombie sitcom Ned and Sunshine; the full version of suicidal children's story Bernard the Lonely Snail; "Indoor Voices", a discussion of the film with Mary Russell, Tom Russell, David Schonscheck, and Adrienne Patterson.

Heres the trailer:

How to Mess Up Your Movie

Chris Gore wrote a great list called "10 Stupid Things Indie Filmmakers Do to Mess Up Their Movies." There are 10, but 2 great ones that lately we see several film magazines and blogs talking about in their own ways. Here are two of the most noted ones:

Number 1 is:

No Money For Marketing

"There should be a line item in your budget for money to be spent on promotion and festival travel. Getting the film made is only HALF the battle - now you have to sell it. Without money for posters, publicity, travel, fees, delivery costs, etc. - the odds of selling your movie will be stacked against you."

(comment: Ever wonder about that DIY film that you read about somewhere online once and never heard from or saw again? Its the unfortunate reality of DIY filmmaking in general. Without a top 10 tier festival premiere, you need a marketing budget. Thats why several of these films remain stuck in cyberspace, usually with the director eventually abandoning the project you once read about for another film, only to repeat the same cycle again and again (this has led to what the indie world refers to as "the oversaturation"). On another note, a lot is made about small movies that have done well on the festival circuit and have even gotten into theatres - theatrical releases are rare, and are usually supported by a nice sized budget somewhere after the film has been completed, to assist the promotion of the festival premiere. Sundance itself is a fiercely competitive town, that requires stickers, posters, buttons, electronic press kits for media, and whatever else can be achieved to promote and pack your screening. Then there are delivery items for distributors, but we dont have the space here...

As experts Lyle Foggia and Kelly Neal pointed out in an earlier edition of Film Arts Magazine, a budget of nearly $25,000 is required to fully roll out a feature film of any budget, even more important for ultra low budget films. They write, "Indeed, as industry executives and consultants ourselves for over two decades, we cannot emphasize enough the peril of pre-maturely exposing your film, even to festival programmers, who are also overwhelmed with hundreds, if not thousands of submissions. As many filmmakers have regrettably discovered, there are no second chances with the key players in Indiewood." See this all important full piece HERE for details.)

There is No "I" in team.

"Dont try to do it all yourself. If you try to do it all, you will fail. Delegate, delegate, delegate. Build a strong team to help you during the production, in post production, after completion for internet promotion, and while you're at the festival, otherwise, you'll be the only one hanging up posters. "

(comment: this whole process takes a very important thing called 'money.')

The rest of this list is as follows:

1) Weak Script
2) Casting non-film actors
3) Sacrificing quality to meet a deadline
4) Wearing too many hats
5) Clearances
6) Bad sound
7) No festival strategy
8) Serious documentary = snore. Funny documentary = sale.

Check out more vital info on the realities of low budget filmmaking promotion in "Chris Gore's Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide - 3rd Edition."

Joe, the Thespian

Similar to Ed Burns, director Joe Swanberg not only finds inspiration behind the lens, but also occasionally in front of it. While each and every one of Swanberg's features have premiered at SXSW and gone on to official releases, several other films where he is appearing as an actor have not. Here are some lesser known films for you to look up where Joe appears as an actor:

Hohokam
Completed in mid 2007
Premieres at Harvard Film Archive and Dallas Video Festival.
Premieres internationally at the Corona Cork Film Fest in Ireland.
Is included in the historic IFC series New Talkies.
Released with assistance from Indiepix.

More info at the site for Hohokam HERE.

The Mountain, The River and The Road
Despite a cast of familiar NewTalkies faces that included Justin Rice and Tipper Newton, the film was rejected from Sarasota Film Festival (much to the filmmaker's noted disappointment).
Premieres earlier this year in March at the alternative Sarasota Fringe Film Festival. Goes on to play Sidewalk Festival in Birmingham, AL.
Playing the festival circuit, still no word on release.

More info on the film HERE:

Present Company
Completed in 2007
The first Frank Ross film to premiere at SXSW in 2008.
Great reviews by Karina Longworth at Spout and Hammer to Nail.
Plays Dallas Video Fest and Sidewalk Festival.
No word on release.

R.I.P. John Hughes

I think my first exposure to John Hughes' work was "National Lampoon's Vacation". My parents actually saw this one in the theater when my sister and I were little. They told us that the entire theater reacted to it, especially when the car is driving itself down the road. We got to see the TV version when I was about 6 or 7 & it became one of those films we could all watch and get a laugh from.

Over the years, I saw his teen comedies, "Home Alone", Christmas Vacation, "Uncle Buck" and even some of the ho-hum films like "Baby's Day Out".

The most recent film I saw, though underrated, was "Career Opportunities". My husband told me about it for ages & insisted I see it; I finally did and it was hilarious. For those who've not seen it, I highly recommend it. It's a little dated but like his other films, you can relate to it. My husband also got me to see another underrated but good film of his, "Dutch".

Some people were waiting for John Hughes to make a comeback. I have to wonder how he'd write about the teen experience in the age of cyberbullying and "sexting". If the teens my husband serves and supervises at work are any indication, there's no question about the relevance of "Sixteen Candles", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or any of the other teen comedies to this generation; they love these films & find them just as funny as those who were teens when they came out.

John Hughes' death marks the end of an era & the loss of an icon among 80s children like myself. I hope we'll see someone with even a modicum of his talent get mainstream success.

Spike Lee and Jay-Z's Brooklyn Shoot

Earlier today around noon, two legends in their respective fields, Spike Lee and Jay-Z shot a Rocawear commercial today in the famous Dumbo, Brooklyn. Rocawear of course is Jay-Z's premium clothing line, and he and his team have hired Spike to direct their latest ad.

It was relaxed, and fast simultaneously. It may be the fastest production day I have seen with a scale this size. Jay-z was relaxed, and although it was his show, Spike seemed very cool as well, by now its old hat. They both made several jokes, and at one point, Jay even pointed out that Spike was wearing a competitor's brand (pretty funny). The shot itself was nuts too, you can tell from the pics below. It could be one of the coolest shots ever, we'll have to see. The only hint I can give you are the pictures, and tell you that it was a "double dolly shot," with the Williamsburg bridge as the back drop. Insane.

Stay tuned, hopefully we will have the completed commercial just as early.

That's "Mr. Jonze" To You

Throwback Sundays this week looks at yet another masterpiece from Spike Jonze.

This music video was for a song called "Drop" from The Pharcyde, a group that made its splash in the nineties. It was known for its backward motion, and the impossible movements that the rappers were made to appear to create.

A lot of people have ripped off this effect since but this is the ORIGINAL - The artist's learned the song backwards. When the video was shot, they lip synced backwards to give this amazing effect when the video itself was reversed during editing. Enjoy!

Some Praise for Cookies & Cream:

"Honest and absorbing...Its a great example of what tiny budget cinema can - and should - do."
- Michael Tully - HammertoNail.com

"Cookies & Cream pulls off a rare feat as it deftly tells the story of an independent woman making her own way in a career that creates its own set of obstacles."
- Ron Moore - TheExaminer.com

"A strikingly visual film, full of fantastic performances from everyone in the cast, and a magnificent musical score. It stays in your mind well after seeing it because it offers a vantage point not often shown in cinema."
- RogueCinema.com

"This sort of character study is quite difficult to achieve and its a testament to both the writing and the acting that the film accomplishes so much. Cookies & Cream does more than any other film Ive seen to humanize the people working in the adult entertainment industry."
