1 Hour 2 Live

The film version of Pastor Princeton Holt Sr.'s play "1 Hour 2 Live" is nearly complete with post production! The story follows Keshawn Davis, a gang member, who is now on death row. In his cell, he is repeatedly visited by the spirits of his victims who tortue him mentally and seek answers to why he murdered them taking their innocent lives.

About the play:

"ONE HOUR 2 LIVE" - is a dramatic play designed to curtail GANG RELATED MURDERS.

It is a fictional dramatic performance that's an all-too-real revelation of what happens behind the scene when you take another person's life.

The play takes place in the head of a gang member on death row, with one hour to live, before his execution, for the murder to two neighborhood acquaintances. The dead people, whom he murdered come into his jail cell and expose all the unseen ramifications that take place when you take another persons life. They get him to understand that when he killed them, he ended his own life, as well as all of his future possibilities. This play is designed to highlight the value and sacredness of human life.

If you had one hour to live, where would you go? What would you do? Who would you want to see? Gang member Keshawn Davis has but one hour to live. And he knows it.

3 Bands to be featured in upcoming One Way Or Another Productions

You all need to check out these three bands which will be featured in the upcoming film Cookies & Cream.

First up is: The Rollo Treadway (pictured). This local Brooklyn band is a complete throwback to the psychedelic jam bands of the 60's and 70's! They remind me of a cross between The Who and The Beach Boys. Their track "Rua Gararu 188" will be featured in the film. You can buy their album on itunes, or at www.myspace.com/therollotreadway

Second, we have Rosemary's Garden. Their fun rock track "Adelaide" will be in the movie. Their overall sound is a sort of gritty all american rock with a little thoughtful folk added in for flavor. You can hear their songs and learn more about them at www.myspace.com/rosemarysgarden.

Last but not least: The Golden Age Of Radio. Self described on myspace as: "indie/indie/indie," this local Brooklyn group brings a hard rock ambiance to their indie style. They actually perform live in One Way's upcoming production A Life In Rewind (at Arlene's Grocery!) and one of the actors in the movie (Julia Howe) is a member of the band!  Check them out at www.myspace.com/thegoldenageofradio

Three Bands You May Or May Not Know About #2 (Little Known Veterans)

1) Stereophonics: These guys have been around for a while, but whenever I tell someone about them, they have never heard of them! Listen to this AMAZING cover of The Beatles song Don't Let Me Down. You can practically hear they lead singer's heart breaking in his voice.

Check them out at www.stereophonics.com/

2) Pink Martini: These guys have been around for about 15 years. They call themselves a "little orchestra" but they are really a throwback to the jazz bands of the past, with a world twist. They perform songs in a lot of Jazz Styles and sing in languages from Japanese to Arabic! Their latest album is titled Eugene, but my favorite track, Sympathique comes from their first popular album of the same name.

Find out more about them at www.pinkmartini.com

3) Goldfrapp: When this group was formed in 1999 their style was very ethereal and ambient, they have since transformed into an electronic dance experience! Listen to this track, Strict Machine, from their latest album, Black Cherry and start dancing!

Check them out at www.goldfrapp.co.uk

"Cookies & Cream" at the Sexy International Film Festival

Cookies & Cream. New York City unofficial premiere. Make sure to stay tuned for updates. Read more about the festival below!

The Sexy International Film festival sounds like a Borat Sagdiyev travelogue, but it's the name of a new film festival set to launch this September in Melbourne and travel on to London and Paris. It is the brainchild of local filmmaker Jason Turley, who says the porn and smut-free festival will be dedicated to films that deal with relationships, marriage, divorce, love, lust and sexual exploration. Turley's cinema tastes range far and wide, from Pasolini to Almodovar, the Three Colours trilogy to Alvin Purple, and he expects SIFF (he resisted calling it the Sexy Travelling International Film Festival for obvious reasons) will be home to G-rated romantic comedies and success-de-scandal films alike. Turley is discussing the event with two Melbourne venues and will be calling for entries in march.

Who Doesn't Like Ben Folds?

Remember back in middle school, high school and college jamming in your room to Ben Folds Five? Its ok. We know you still do it! Everyone can relate to something by this (former) group fronted by world famous singer/songwriter Ben Folds.

Anyways, this universally loved group is reuniting for a one time only concert on the campus of The University of North Carolina. This is the first time they will play together since 2000!! They are going to perform their last album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner. The concert, which is on September 18, is hosted by MySpace. It's part of their "Front to Back" concert series, featuring only concerts where an entire album is played. Some of the proceeds will go to Project Smile, a charity for kids with facial deformities. The concert will be broadcast in October on Myspace at http://myspace.com/fronttoback.

Brian Ackley debuts with "Uptown"

We are proud to announce that Brian Ackley's debut feature film Uptown is in production. "Two kickabout hearts, one lonely, the other lost, come together in Uptown."

Production locations have spread out over various places in historic Manhattan - including Central Park, the Upper West Side, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The film features brilliant performances from multi-award-winning actress Meissa Hampton (Fortunes of War, Modern Times), and Chris Riquinha (Cookies & Cream). The film is being produced by Princeton Holt, and features co-production and camera operation by Ryan Balas. The score is being composed by our good friend and talented musician, Dayva Segal.

We are 75% complete on the film's principle photography, which includes such production toys as 2 camera shoots, and multiple wireless mics. As you can see in the photo above, one scene was shot on a moving subway car, while recording performance dialogue. Yes, we know. We're nuts.

Brian Ackley has written and directed several projects since his time at Brooklyn College in 2006. Those include the surprising Hostage Person, Erica (which he hopes to make into a feature), and La Fleur Sans Vie. As an actor, Brian also appears in Princeton Holt's Phish, as well as having a pivotal role as Dylan in Cookies & Cream.

The film will wrap up production on weekends - which are the 19th, 20th, and 26th of September. If you'd like to get your feet wet, help out and join the family, feel free to contact us!

Our girl, Naama!

March 22nd, 2007

Here is a cool article that features the wonderful Naama Kates who plays Jodie in Cookies & Cream. Make sure to look out for her and her future work at the links below. Congrats Naama, we love you!

CATCH THIS RISING STAR!
by Chip Maloney

Navigating a course through the unguided and thick-with-disappointment jungle that is the New York City acting scene is a treacherous, soul-scarring undertaking that few are capable of and even fewer find any success with, but for Naama Kates there is no Plan B. Four years in hell later, her journey is nearly complete, with leading roles in two upcoming feature films; however, any measure of respite is a long forgotten fantasy for this determined 23-year-old actress, for she knows precisely how difficult this passage has been.

In person, it is abundantly clear that Naama is in possession of all of the talent, beauty, and poise God cheated everyone else out of. Her dreamy countenance and beguiling radiance is immediate, perfect and captivating… the stuff tortured composers and poets have long struggled to describe in immortal odes. There is little doubt that Naama Kates is headed for great things.

SoHo Journal: Acting is not an easy life. What made you pursue that? No, it’s not easy. There’s a lot of downtime and waiting, and taking horrible jobs, but I knew I wanted to be an actress since I was three years old. Maybe I have some need for the adoration of the millions, but at the same time, I don’t want to be unable to go to a restaurant. I don’t really desire a Hollywood, family-movie type of career…but that doesn’t seem to be the direction I’m going in.

Which direction are you going? I prefer interesting, edgier roles. The kind that a lot of the European actresses do, or like Maggie Gyllenhaal, Parker Posey, Rachel McAdams, and Michelle Williams do here.

Describe your upcoming features and the type of characters you play. The first one is titled, Nothing Sacred, and was directed by Dylan Bank & Morgan Pehme. It’s a horror fantasy thriller due out in April. My character is named Delilah, and she is a priestess in an evil cult. My father is the leader of this cult, and he has populated it with his minions by having children with different women from all walks of life all over the world. According to a prophecy, if he has more than one child with the same woman, it will bring about his destruction. Of course, it’s revealed that I’m a twin, and while I was raised in the cult, my brother Blue was hidden away by my mother and raised on the run. The movie takes place a year after my brother has found me and introduced me to my dying mother. The rest of the movie is about our journey to prevent our father from achieving immortality.

How did you prepare for that role? Well, it’s not as easy to do horror and fantasy films because there’s no point of reference to draw from in real life. I only had three weeks to prepare for this movie, so I didn’t have a lot of time either. I focused on understanding my character’s motivation since she does magic and spells, and sort of lives on the fringe of society; I put myself into a kind of tough mindset and read several books on the tarot, witchcraft and ancient mythology.

Three weeks to memorize all of your dialogue must’ve been hard. I use a technique with my lines that involves personalizing them, thinking about the meaning of every word and putting an action to everything, so I understand why I’m saying them.

Who were your co-stars in Nothing Sacred? It was an American and European co-production, so we shot some of it here, some of it in Europe, and I was very fortunate to get to do a couple of scenes with Philippe Nahon and Thierry Lhermitte. They’re both top grossing French actors.
And the other film? It’s called Normal, and it’s a dramedy directed by Jehane Noujaim. He shot the documentary Control Room. This is his first narrative feature, and I play a lesbian dominatrix who actually likes her job, and uses it to get what she wants…which is to be involved in movies.
Dare we ask how you prepared for that part? There was a lot of rehearsal for this one. It was almost done in a theatrical style. I also know some women who work in dungeons, and because the screenplay is so well-written, it was very easy to understand that character. I also worked very closely with the screenwriters and that helped. The movie also explains the psychology of the lifestyle.

Have you done any theater? I was in a play called Beyond the Veil. It was written and directed by John Chatterton. It was about the occult movement in Victorian England, and the characters were based on real people.

Do you prefer theater over film? I think I prefer the camera. Even though in film, you sometimes have to turn your head like 300 times for one take, I think it picks up more of my energy.

You must’ve been on Law & Order by now? Surprisingly I haven’t.

No? Every actor in New York has done an episode of Law & Order. I know, but I never did the knocking on doors thing you need to do for parts like that.

No cattle calls for you? I don’t usually do those, but I did find the part for Normal on Craigslist and went to a cattle call audition. There were tons of people there, and I waited for hours until they were down to one person ahead of me. Then, the people renting the space told everyone to clear out, and that they didn’t have time to see me, but they took my information. I eventually got a call back from them.

That’s pretty amazing. Yeah, they told me they’d been looking for months, and had seen thousands of girls, but they chose me.

Have you worked in Hollywood? I’ve been out there on jobs, and ultimately, I’d like to be bi-coastal. I kind of hate it, but I’ll go there for work.

Where did you study acting? Not in any formal acting school or conservatory, but I had classes at NYU, Fordham, and The Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts.

You must be a natural. To what do you attribute your burgeoning success? You have to have the drive. It’s a certain kind of drive, but not aggressive. Of course, I’ve also had to give it the commitment of time. I moved to New York when I was 18, on my own, and with no connections. I believe that I’m finally starting to get the energy out of this that I’ve put into it.

Ardie Fuqua Revisited

ARDIE FUQUA

You've seen him on HBO's Def Comedy Jam and Apollo Comedy Hour. While attending Rutgers University as a Journalism Major, Ardie ventured to New York City's Uptown Comedy Club in Harlem. There he watched a lot of young guys getting laughs and thought it looked like a lot of fun, he had no idea you could make a living from it. After working just one year in comedy, he became a regular at the Boston Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy and Carolines. Since then he's been seen on NBC's Friday Night Videos and HBO's Def Comedy Jam and Apollo Comedy Hour. When not on the road, he can be seen at his home based club, the Comedy Cellar in New York City. All of this, and he's IN OUR MOVIE!!!

Here is the classic standup routine from Ardie Fuqua on HBO's Bad Boys of Comedy. Ardie is our good friend from Cookies & Cream, where we proudly gave him his first dramatic performance in a feature playing "Jonathan." You can also catch Ardie occasionally on VH-1's "I Love The..." series, as well as on occasional MTV programming. Put the kids to bed, this one is FOR GROWN UPS! ;)

Up and Coming Singer/Songwriter: Andrew Mantuano

Andrew Mantuano is a singer/songwriter from Central Jersey. He has played shows in the New York Metro area for the past few years. His style is self described as acoustic pop. Influenced by everything from The Backstreet Boys to Dashboard Confessional, his music is emotional yet easy to listen to.

Check out this beautiful song, Vis Major.

Twists of Fate Premiere

Recently, I had the privilege to be invited to the NYC premiere of a cool new film Twists of Fate. The film was produced by our good friend Rick Borgia (who plays the father in Cookies & Cream), and his team Sal and Louis Borgia. Rick also is the lead in the film and gives an equally chilling and warm performance - a hard thing to acheive in any film role. Other standout performances included Deborah Ludwig as Lee, and Jason Schaeffer as Danny. I recommend the film for its heart as well as its action. Props to my man Conrad Glover for his directing!

The story follows an ex-con, Joey DeMarco. Back in the day, he was this hotshot, killer for hire. His specialty was the knife and he was real good with one. Think Mack the Knife and that was Joey. It was said, “Joey couldn’t hit a bull in the butt with a bag of rice. Put a shank in his hand? He’d rip you open like a tomato, 30 feet away. Never see or hear it coming”. 15 years in prison, however, can change a person. Joey had a lot of time to do some soul-searching and think about his past… what had become of his life, and more important, his future, once he was finally released from a tiny prison cell to the outside world. He wanted no more of it. His past life had brought him nothing but grief and now, at 50 years old, all he wanted was to simply blend in, to disappear and live his remaining years in peace without having to look back over his shoulder to his past life of crime and those who controlled it and him. Joey’s kid brother, Phillip, however, was another story. At 4O, Phillip DeMarco was a small time hood, a loose neighborhood cannon who drank too much for his own good… and eventually Joey’s. One night, Phillip went too far when he robbed a Hell’s Kitchen poker game, run by Irish mob boss, Billy Sullivan. It wouldn’t take the Sullivan gang long to catch up with Phillip and deal with him in mortal fashion. After all, who would know? Who would care? Who would remember? Because of this, Joey would now be compelled to emerge from the shadows, for he would know, he would care and he would never forget. In a brazen act of revenge, courage, some might say, madness, Joey DeMarco would take on the Sullivan gang on their own turf, in their own den and almost succeed. He would get away, wounded, but now Joey would be the hunted one. Lee is a 40 year old, plain Jane kind of loner who lives a quiet, secluded life, much like an older spinster. While returning home, her arms filled with groceries, Lee is grabbed by a wounded and desperate Joey who lay hidden in the shadows near her front door. At gunpoint, she’s forced into her home and is now Joey’s hostage. Inside, the frightened woman will be forced to hide and nurse Joey back to health while Irish thugs search the neighborhood just outside.

Cookies and Cream in post production!

The rough cut for Cookies and Cream has been completed and Damon is now finishing up our sound mix. There is some ADR required (welcome to the world of on-location shooting in New York City), afterwhich we will proceed to our final cut. After our final cut, Damon will score the film for another 4 weeks, while Jorge does our color correction. We anticipate a final cut by the first week of October.

Our first film festival screening at the Sexy International Film Festival is scheduled for November 21-23 in New York City at Cinemart Cinemas. We will announce whether or not we will be screening the film "out of competition" to protect our "virgin" premiere status for upcoming festivals. Stay tuned as we will keep you posted on festivals and other screening info.

Cookies and Cream is a character piece that centers around Carmen, a racially mixed single mother who accepts an adult modeling gig to take care of her daughter and herself. The film was written and directed by Princeton Holt and produced by Brian Ackley. It stars Jace Nicole (Phish), Ardie Fuqua (HBO's Bad Boyz of Comedy), Brian Ackley (Hostage Person, Phish), Naama Kates (Normal), Rick Borgia (Twists of Fate), Chris Riquinha (Uptown), Kent Sutton, Thyais Walsh (Panther), Shannone Holt (Project Runway), Danny Doherty (Grasslands), and others.
