Tom's Corner:
The Other Guys
The Other Guys
(Adam McKay, director - 2010)
Usually, I'm not a big fan of Will Ferrell. I'll be the first to admit that I avoided his last few movies. Something about The Other Guys interested me though. On the surface, it looks like just another buddy cop comedy...but come, dip below the surface with me and see how much more the movie has to offer.
I love how the movie seemingly follows the two generic “on the edge” cops played by Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson...you know, the Rock (sorry Dwayne, you could win a Nobel Peace Prize and people would still know you as the Rock). Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for us, those two hit a roadblock early on, when it turns out that this isn't an action movie. So enter the perennially desk bound duo of Allen “Paper Bitch” Gimble (Will Ferrell) and Terry “Yankee Clipper” Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). It's hilarious how Hoitz got his nickname, and this writer, along with countless people who are not Yankees fans, would love to see this actually happen.
These are two men who have totally different approaches to law enforcement. Gimble tends to follow the paper trail, looking up the background information. Hoitz just wants to get on the streets and bust heads. Gimble and Hoitz bicker their way throughout the movie, miss each others cues and make you laugh throughout. But they are not the only treat here.
The great Michael Keaton is in the house, ladies and gentlemen! I have not seen Keaton in many movies lately, and it is really hard to imagine why. He still delivers his lines with his inimitable style and verve, and carries even the most absurd situations into laughably believable reality. Steve Coogan also gives a few great lines here, in his usual understated style.
But the real stars are Wahlberg and Ferrell (which is kind of what's intended, seeing as they ARE the stars). They are a perfect mismatched duo, and it is truly enjoyable to watch them attempt to get their acts together.
See this one, it'll make you laugh.
