Filmmaker Kris Byrnes Elected to Compete for NBC Exposure

Congratulations to Kris Byrnes of Brooklyn, NY for being nominated by the Brooklyn College Film Department to participate in a competition organized by OUT@NBC and the LGBT Center of New York.  For its 30th year anniversary, the LGBT Center invited film and journalism schools throughout the city to nominate filmmakers and journalists to take part in a contest involving the creation of 2 minute spotlight videos about LGBT history.

Kris was one of five nominees chosen by the organization.  She will present her 2 minute video on the LGBT movement at their annual fundraising Gala on April 11thwhere guests will vote on their favorite.  The winning filmmaker/journalist will be asked to expand their video into a 20 minute documentary to be broadcast nationally on NBC.

Kris Byrnes is a North Carolina native now working in NYC. Her recently completed undergraduate thesis film, “Bind”, focuses on human rights in a dystopian society. Politically influenced themes are evident in much of her work.

Kris spent a year as a videographer/editor in the New 42nd St. Apprentice program, where her interest in documentary and non-narrative subject matters were cultivated. She has since started working as an Assistant Editor with the international health and wellness channel, Veria, and plans to continue her work within both fields while still writing politically charged films.

Established in 1983, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York is at the heart of the LGBT community in New York City, providing quality health and wellness programs in a welcoming space that fosters connections and celebrates cultural contributions. The Center hosts arts and entertainment events, advocacy groups and family gatherings to offering youth, recovery and overall wellness programs.  Their annual fundraising Gala – the Center Dinner – will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.  Special guests include Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka.
